Getting Lexical on Fashion Lexicon

Definition of Lexicon:

‘The vocabulary of a person, language or branch of knowledge OR a dictionary’

Much has been said in 2020 about the need to make the fashion industry more inclusive; one of the ways to assist fashion to become more inclusive and accessible is to make the language of fashion easier to use. Over the centuries fashion has developed an enormous range of technical and descriptive terminology and language. The number of illustrated dictionaries of fashion and costume attest to this. To make matters more confusing, the origins of many terms are French, whilst other countries have evolved their own words for garments, silhouettes and design details. In addition, each season new trends emerge that add further layers to the language of fashion (cottagecore or Dark Academia, for example).

By using words and images together and adopting different perspectives, I’d like to think that Fashion Lexicon can help to unpack and explain fashion-speak. It’s been a little quiet on the Fashion Lexicon blog, but @fashionlexicon has been spelling it out in words and pictures (on Instagram). I have been posting my fashion alphabets or ABCs…as an easy-to-follow way of getting into the language of fashion. Each one is themed, with the current alphabet mapping fashion facts from countries of the World from Australia to Zambia. The feed is a bit like an illustrated dictionary, but more fun.
